Two Droitwich fencers attended this year's Wenlock Olympian Games, which are held annually in Much Wenlock, Shropshire. These games were the fore-runner of the modern Olympic Games. The Baron de Coubertain visited the games at Much Wenlock, and this is thought to have inspired him to found the modern Games, staring in 1896. This year, our epeeists went to Much Wenlock in July, but with it being a foil competition, some of the opposition was just too much for us. Both had tough poule rounds, and went out early in the Direct Elimination. Paul Price lost twice to the top foilist in his daughter's University club - something for her to take back to Cardiff! Paul Ford progressed through the Men's Foil Plate competition, and finally got knocked out in the semi-final. Unfortunately he had a sabreur refereeing, and I suspect the foil timings got the better of them both. Still - a fun day, and lots of fencing. Next year, we'll have to see about sending some foilists as well to reclaim our club honour! | |
