Competition levels

When I put a competition on our calendar, I'll give it a difficulty level between 1 and 5 - Level one being the easiest to get into for those who haven't been fencing for very long, and 5 being the most difficult event anyone will normally fence in.  Here's a description of these levels in a little more detail:

Level 1 - Beginners
This is the easiest level.  Suitable for novice fencers, those who have been fencing for about a year, and want to have a go at their first competitions.  There are very few at this level, the majority being local events.

Level 2 - Intermediate
The second level is suitable for club fencers who don't regularly fence competitions.

Level 3 - Lower-level Opens
For fencers starting out on the Open circuit.  These events can occasionally be more difficult, but being smaller, have a more friendly atmosphere.

Level 4 - Standard Opens
These can be quite tough, but are recommended for the “full” competition experience.  Competitive atmosphere.

Level 5 - National Level
Very competitive, high proportion of national and international fencers.  Many club fencers will not win a fight all day. Only the biggest Opens and National level events.
